what does this look like?

In Awa we use Numicon to support our teaching and learning. Numicon is a multi-sensory approach to learning that emphasises three key aspects of doing mathematics: communicating mathematically, exploring relationships and generalising concepts.

What this looks like in class is lots of hands-on learning, exploring and talking.

In Moana, we follow a structured mathematics approach that covers Phase 1 (Year 3) and Phase 2 (Year 4) of the New Zealand Curriculum. Our programme is supported by PR1ME Mathematics as a core resource, alongside other tools such as Numicon to strengthen understanding. Each session begins with whole-class number knowledge warm-ups to build fluency and confidence. This is followed by guided small-group teaching with the classroom teacher, where learning is targeted to individual needs. When not working directly with the teacher, students consolidate their learning through purposeful follow up tasks, maths games and the online PR1ME Maths Pro programme.

Moana

in Rākau maths takes place every day during Block 2. Students are grouped according to the level of PRIME book they are currently working through, ensuring teaching is targeted to their needs. Each lesson begins with an engaging warm-up activity designed to strengthen number knowledge. During the main part of the session, groups are pulled aside for guided maths lessons aligned with the PRIME programme. To support and reinforce learning, we also integrate number knowledge practice sheets, the online programme Maths Pro, and a variety of maths games to keep students motivated and engaged.

In Manu  maths takes place every day during Block 2. Students are organised into groups based on the PRIME book level they are working from, which allows teaching to be closely matched to their individual needs. Each session begins with a warm-up activity that either revisits important ideas from previous lessons or strengthens number knowledge. The main focus of the lesson is on smaller group teaching, where the teacher delivers guided lessons aligned with the PRIME programme.
To support and deepen learning, students also work on number knowledge practice sheets, use the online programme Maths Pro, and take part in a range of engaging maths games. In addition to this, extra groups are run to provide targeted support where needed, as well as to give a group of Year 8 students exposure to more content before they transition to college.
